Houston, TX -- Federal and state officials announced today that the deadline to register for disaster assistance has been extended to September 7, 2001. Anyone who suffered damages due to Tropical Storm Allison is urged to call the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) registration line at 1-800-462-9029 to apply for disaster assistance.

"The large number of people still calling for disaster assistance indicates to us that there are still a lot of people out there who need help," said Duke Mazurek, state coordinating officer for the disaster recovery effort.

Homeowners, renters, business owners and anyone whose vehicle was damaged within the 31 Southeast Texas counties declared a disaster area by President Bush can register by calling FEMA's toll free number 1-800-462-9029. People who are speech-and-hearing-impaired may call 1-800-462-7585. Operators are available from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m., seven days a week.
