FEMA And Local Officials Unite With Industries To Protect Pueblo Of Acoma Against Chemical Accidents

Denton, TX -- Area industries will join local officials to protect the Pueblo of Acoma, New Mexico, against hazardous material accidents. The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) will meet with the Pueblo of Acoma and Cibola County fire, law enforcement, medical staff and the local industries of DPC Industries, Inc., and RINCHEM on July 28, 2001, to evaluate the risks and hazards of chemical accidents.
These officials, working as the Tribal Emergency Response Commission (TERC) and the Local Emergency Planning Committee (LEPC), will evaluate the danger of spills to the community. Officials have reviewed the emergency response procedures that pertain to their area of expertise and made necessary revisions.
The LEPC will develop or improve existing plans, response procedures, and training using FEMA's Comprehensive Hazardous Materials Emergency Response Capability Assessment Program. They will evaluate available area resources from multiple jurisdictions to prepare for, and respond to, a potential chemical accident.
DPC Industries, Inc., will provide equipment used in the mock scene and provide technical assistance and follow-up training. RINCHEM has provided training to the Pueblo of Acoma and the Pueblo of Laguna staff and will be available for technical assistance.
The final test of the emergency plan will be the July 28 exercise, tailored to community needs, that simulates a hazardous materials incident.
