Fire Prevention Week Celebration At Newton Fire Station # 4

Boston, MA -- Newton Fire Chief Edward Murphy, Mayor David B. Cohen, Newton firefighters and Setti D. Warren, Regional Director of the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) Boston office, joined community residents, parents and children in learning about, "Fire Drills: The Great Escape". During the annual Fire Prevention week event firefighters from fire Stations #1 and # 4 filled the afternoon with fun activities and hands-on demonstrations to teach children to Stop, Drop and Roll, how to escape from the child size safety house, and shared crucial fire safety tips with their parents.
Many people believe "fires can only happen to other people - not to me and not in my home." Yet over 80 percent of fire deaths occur in the home, most often claiming the lives of the young, the elderly and the disadvantaged. Too few people develop and practice home fire escape plans, and it is this lack of planning that can prove deadly. Over the past two years the National Fire Protection Association has documented 58 lives saved as a result of home fire drills and family escape planning.
FEMA is committed to reducing the number of fire deaths and injuries to the public by increasing public awareness about the dangers of fire. Here are a few safety tips:
- Plan and practice fire escape routes and make sure everyone knows two ways out of every room
- Use safety plugs in electrical outlets, especially if you have small children
- Install at least one smoke detector outside every bedroom and on every level of house
- Keep a fire extinguisher in the kitchen
- Remain calm and evacuate quickly and safely
- Once out-Stay Out!
