DENTON, TEXAS -- Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) Region VI Regional Administrator William Peterson has announced the formation of a Regional Advisory Council to advise FEMA officials on emergency management issues. This follows the announcement of the formation of a National Advisory Council in June.

The development of the National Advisory Council was set into motion by the Post-Katrina Emergency Management Reform Act of 2006.

The Regional Advisory Council represents a cross section of officials from emergency management and law enforcement, emergency response providers from state, local, and tribal governments, private sector, and nongovernmental organizations from throughout the five states in FEMA Region VI. The first nominees to accept membership are from Arkansas. The members and their areas of expertise are:

Emergency Response Provider
Ronnie Baldwin, Cross County Sheriff

Public Health
Dr. Garland Camper, Chief Deputy Coroner of Pulaski County

Local Government
Judge Bill Hicks, County Judge of Independence County

State Government
David Maxwell, Director of the Arkansas Department of Emergency Management

"The members of the council are recognized experts across the range of emergency management disciplines," said Regional Administrator William Peterson. “We look forward to working with them and welcome their emergency management ideas and contributions.”

A meeting schedule will be established when the full council is finalized. Members initially will serve staggered term lengths. One third will serve for one year, one third will serve for two years and one third will serve for three years. Eventually, all terms will be three years long.

FEMA coordinates the federal government’s role in preparing for, preventing, mitigating the effects of, responding to, and recovering from all domestic disasters, whether natural or man-made, including acts of terror.
