FEMA To Announce Grant To Norman Fire Department

DENTON, Texas -- Gary Jones of the Department of Homeland Security’s Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), will join Norman officials to announce a $210,378 grant to the Norman Fire Department.

The grant is the third largest in Oklahoma awarded during the 2003 funding year of the Assistance to Firefighters Grant program. In 2003, this program provided over $10.2 million to 196 Oklahoma fire departments.

“Thousands of grants show first hand that President Bush is committed to providing communities with the support and resources necessary to prepare and mitigate for emergencies in their area,” said Michael D. Brown, Under Secretary of Homeland Security’s Emergency Preparedness & Response. “This funding shows that saving lives and property are a top priority for FEMA.”

On March 1, 2003, FEMA became part of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security. FEMA's continuing mission within the new department is to lead the effort to prepare the nation for all hazards and effectively manage federal response and recovery efforts following any national incident. FEMA also initiates proactive mitigation activities, trains first responders, and manages the National Flood Insurance Program and the U.S. Fire Administration.
