Release Number: R4-01-45

Atlanta, GA -- Probation Detention Centers in Appling, Bacon, Long and Turner Counties and five Georgia Department of Corrections structures in Decatur County soon will undergo installation of impact resistant windows that can protect occupants from winds up to 110 mph.

The product, known as Lexan MR10, meets wind-load protective measures established by hurricane-prone Miami-Dade County, Fla. "This is one more way of reducing storm losses by making our buildings more disaster resistant," said Federal Emergency Management Agency Region IV Director Kenneth O. Burris Jr.

Total project cost of the new windows will be $75,000, of which $56,250 will come from the Federal Emergency Management Agency's Hazard Mitigation Grant Program.

The Georgia Emergency Management Agency (GEMA) has prioritized wind retrofit projects and the nine buildings are among the first in the state to undergo the new protection.

"This wind retrofit grant will play a vital role in helping the Georgia Department of Corrections maintain critical operations capabilities during severe weather events," said GEMA Director Gary McConnell.
