Release Date: December 17, 2001
Release Number: R4-01-46

Atlanta, GA -- Jasper County's 911 Center/Emergency Operations Building soon will see its communications tower replaced by one capable of withstanding winds of 120 mph. The maximum wind-load on the existing tower is 60 mph.

In addition, hurricane shutters that can stand 120 mph winds without shattering will be installed on the EOC building. The tower will be replaced and a new one erected near the existing site. "These efforts to strengthen those structures will go a long way to help emergency managers to provide better protection to the public," said Kenneth O. Burris Jr., director of the Federal Emergency Management Agency's southeast region.

The total project amount of $51,040 will make the change possible. Paying $38,280 of the sum from its Hazard Mitigation Grant Program will be the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA).

The Georgia Emergency Management Agency (GEMA) recently prioritized wind retrofit projects for Georgia and the Jasper County facility is among the first group approved.

"This wind retrofit grant will play a vital role in helping Jasper County maintain critical operations capabilities during severe weather events," said GEMA Director Gary McConnell.
