ORLANDO, Fla. -- Floridians hardest hit by Hurricane Charley may now have an easier time hiring contractors to perform roof repairs. Governor Jeb Bush has signed Executive Order 04-188 suspending the state requirement that roof repairs be done only by roofing contractors.

The Order allows residential, building and general contractors licensed and certified in Florida to perform roofing and re-roofing repairs in Charlotte, Lee, Desoto, Hardee, Polk, Osceola, Orange, Seminole and Volusia counties. However, it does not include metal or tile roofing; these types of jobs must still be performed by licensed roofing contractors. It also does not allow unlicensed, out-of-state contractors to perform repairs.

“By expanding the pool of licensed contractors available to make roofing repairs, this Executive Order speeds relief to Hurricane Charley victims,” says Diane Carr, Secretary of the Florida Department of Business and Professional Regulation, which is responsible for licensing contractors.

FEMA and the State Emergency Response Team urge victims of the storm to protect themselves against unscrupulous and unlicensed contractors. Licensure may be verified by calling 850-487-1395 or visiting www.MyFloridaLicense.com. Unlicensed activity may be reported through 850-488-6603.
