Ribbon Cutting Set Thursday For West Memorial Mobile Home

CHARLESTON, W. Va. -- A ribbon-cutting ceremony for the R.A. West Memorial Mobile Home Park in Varney, Mingo County, will be held at 11:00 a.m. tomorrow, Thursday. The site will accommodate 16 temporary housing units and is located on Route 52 in Varney, just past the Route 65 turnoff.
To date a total of 86 mobile homes and 313 travel trailers are currently occupied following the Memorial Day storms.
Mingo County was the most heavily damaged area of West Virginia after the storms that began Memorial Day. Many residents' homes were destroyed or badly damaged, becoming uninhabitable.
Priority for temporary housing is given to individuals with critical disaster housing needs; those living in shelters, those with medical conditions, families in overcrowded housing, and residents whose homes represent an imminent danger.
On March 1, 2003, FEMA became part of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security. FEMA's continuing mission within the new department is to lead the effort to prepare the nation for all hazards and effectively manage federal response and recovery efforts following any national incident. FEMA also initiates proactive mitigation activities, trains first responders, and manages the National Flood Insurance Program and the U.S. Fire Administration.
