ATLANTA, Ga. -- The Regional Operations Center (ROC) of The Department of Homeland Security Federal Emergency Management Agency’s Region IV headquarters activated this morning to coordinate response to Tropical Storm Bonnie and Hurricane Charley.

The ROC serves as the main coordination point between all federal agencies charged with disaster response duties and the state and local governments affected by a disaster. It will remain open until all response activities are complete or transitioned to a forward facility.

Representatives from federal agencies involved in disaster assistance are in the Atlanta center working with disaster officials in Florida, Georgia, South Carolina and other states that could be affected by the storms.
In addition, officials at the center will coordinate contingencies for any interstate evacuations that may occur.

FEMA’S Hurricane Liaison Team, made up of FEMA staff and state and local emergency managers, activated on Monday and is on-site at the National Hurricane Center. The team provides the state’s emergency management agencies with up to date information on the track and intensity of the storms.

On March 1, 2003, FEMA became part of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security. FEMA’s continuing mission within the new department is to lead the effort to prepare the nation for all hazards and effectively manage federal response and recovery efforts following any national incident. FEMA also initiates proactive mitigation activities, trains first responders, and manages the National Flood Insurance Program and the U.S. Fire Administration.
