I applied for disaster assistance two weeks ago and haven't heard from anyone, I keep calling the 1-800-621-3362 number, but I get a busy signal, what should I do?
We are sorry for the busy signals. Please be patient and try calling after 6 p.m. or on a weekend when we are not as busy. We are working every day to improve the service. You may also visit a Disaster Recovery Center in your area to ask about your applications. Locations of Disaster Recovery Centers within your state are listed on the FEMA website.

How long does it take to get help from FEMA?
Within about 10 to 14 days of applying, an inspector will contact you to set up an appointment to see your disaster damages. Typically, within about 10 days after the inspection, if FEMA determines that you qualify for help, you will receive a direct deposit in your bank account or a check in the mail.

My family and I evacuated and stayed in a hotel until we could get back to our house. Can I get any money to cover the hotel costs?
Maybe. You should apply at 1-800-621-FEMA (3362) (hearing/speech impaired only 1-800-462-7585) and submit your receipts to see if the cost is covered. FEMA reviews each request on a case-by-case basis, but in some situations, we do provide some reimbursement for these costs.

Should I wait to clean my home or begin repairs until after an inspector sees it?
No, you should not wait to clean your home or begin repairs. Save your repair receipts. You may take pictures of the damage for your records, however FEMA does not require them for an inspection, and will not be reimburse you for photo supplies.

I lost my food because of the power outage. Will FEMA pay for lost food?
FEMA's disaster assistance program does not cover food losses. However, voluntary organizations in the disaster area may be able to help you with your immediate need for food.

I bought a generator. Will FEMA cover the cost?
Maybe. FEMA has specific criteria for reimbursement of generators and we review all requests for covering this cost on a case-by-case basis. You should apply and submit your receipts to see if the cost is covered.

Will FEMA pay my insurance deductible?
No, FEMA does not cover insurance deductibles.

I have insurance and filed a claim with my insurance agent, but I don't have a place to live. Is there any help for me?
You should apply with FEMA for federal disaster assistance. If your insurance does not cover all of your needs, such as money to pay for a place to stay while you fix your house (insurance companies sometimes call this Additional Living Expense coverage), you may be eligible for FEMA assistance. The federal government cannot give you money for items that insurance covers, but we may be able to help with uncompensated losses.

My vacation home was damaged. Can I get any help?
Federal disaster assistance does not cover vacation or secondary homes. However, if there are occupants of your secondary home they should apply for their Personal Property losses.

FEMA told me to send in my receipts, what is the mailing address?
Please write your name and application number on everything you send to us. Also, be sure to keep a copy for your own records.
