MOBILE, Ala. -- The U.S. Department of Homeland Security's Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) and the Alabama Emergency Management Agency (AEMA) announced today that the Saraland Disaster Recovery Center (DRC) will close at 3 p.m. Monday, November 1, and will be closed all day November 2, as it is scheduled to be a polling place. It will resume normal hours Wednesday, November 3. Normal hours of operation are Monday through Saturday, 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. and closed Sundays starting October 24.

It is not mandatory to visit a DRC to receive FEMA assistance. In addition to DRCs, the FEMA Helpline provides information and can be used to make a change to an existing application. The Helpline number is the same as the FEMA teleregistration number.

Before visiting a DRC victims are urged to register for assistance by calling 800-621-FEMA (3362), or 800-462-7585 for those who are hearing or speech-impaired. The FEMA teleregistration line will remain open 24-hours a day, seven days a week, until further notice. DRCs provide an opportunity to meet face to face with recovery specialists to obtain information and written materials about various disaster aid programs, including FEMA assistance, mitigation programs and low-interest U.S. Small Business Administration loans.

On March 1, 2003, FEMA became part of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security. FEMA's continuing mission within the new department is to lead the effort to prepare the nation for all hazards and effectively manage federal response and recovery efforts following any national incident. FEMA also initiates proactive mitigation activities, trains first responders, and manages Citizen Corps, the National Flood Insurance Program and the U.S. Fire Administration.
