Department Of Homeland Security Announces Nearly $98,000 Grant To Nokomis Fire Department

ATLANTA, Ga. -- The U.S. Fire Administration and the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) Director of the Preparedness Division, R. David Paulison, will visit Nokomis, Florida on Wednesday, October 20, 2004 to announce an award through the 2004 Assistance to Firefighters Grant program.

Paulison will announce that the Nokomis Volunteer Fire Department will receive $97,938 in federal funds to purchase 20 sets of personal protective equipment for the department.

The Assistance to Firefighters Grant Program will make available $750 million to fire departments across the country throughout the year, and is administered by Homeland Security’s Office for Domestic Preparedness in cooperation with the department’s United States Fire Administration.

On March 1, 2003, FEMA became part of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security. FEMA's continuing mission within the new department is to lead the effort to prepare the nation for all hazards and effectively manage federal response and recovery efforts following any national incident. FEMA also initiates proactive mitigation activities, trains first responders, and manages the National Flood Insurance Program and the U.S. Fire Administration.
