HARRISBURG, Pa. -- Individuals in the process of repairing their flood-damaged homes and businesses can get additional help from Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) mitigation experts where they shop for materials.

The focus is on steps people can take to prevent future damage from flooding. Projects can include elevating a hot-water heater or furnace, anchoring a fuel tank, doing landscape stabilization and installing an interior or exterior foundation drainage system.

The mitigation outreach effort, in partnership with the Pennsylvania Emergency Management Agency, began today at 84 Lumber, 160 Millers Run Road in Bridgeville.

Disaster recovery staff will be at the store from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. every day through Friday, Oct. 22.

In addition to learning about mitigation measures from staff at the FEMA table, homeowners, renters and business owners affected by the September flooding can have their questions answered regarding disaster assistance programs.

On March 1, 2003, FEMA became part of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security. FEMA's continuing mission within the new department is to lead the effort to prepare the nation for all hazards and effectively manage federal response and recovery efforts following any national incident. FEMA also initiates proactive mitigation activities, trains first responders, and manages the National Flood Insurance Program and the U.S. Fire Administration.
