ORLANDO, Fla. -- The newly-established Florida Hurricane Housing Hotline, 1-888-472-1727, is intended only for Floridians in areas with no other housing available, disaster recovery officials reminded today. The line is open from 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. Eastern time seven days a week.

Storm victims from other states have tried calling the number for help, but it is intended only for Florida cases.

Others have mistakenly called the Housing Hotline for other disaster-related help. To register for help, ask about other available assistance, or ask about the status of your case, the number to call is 1-800-621-FEMA (3362).

People calling for assistance with emergency housing should be ready to give their name, their FEMA case number if they have one, and how they can be contacted.

The State Emergency Response Team (SERT) is a collaboration of Florida’s state agencies led by the state coordinating officer. SERT’s mission is to ensure that Florida is prepared to respond to emergencies, recover from them, and mitigate their impact. On March 1, 2003, FEMA became part of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security. FEMA's continuing mission within the new department is to lead the effort to prepare the nation for all hazards and effectively manage federal response and recovery efforts following any national incident. FEMA also initiates proactive mitigation activities, trains first responders, and manages the National Flood Insurance Program and the U.S. Fire Administration.
