ASHEVILLE, N.C. -- Disaster Recovery Centers (DRCs) in Clyde in Haywood County and Woodfin in Buncombe County will convert to U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) Loan Assistance Centers on Thursday, October 21. The Loan Assistance Centers will be open daily from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. through October 30. They will be closed Sunday, October 24.

The center in Clyde is located in the Clyde Municipal Building at 8437 Carolina Boulevard.

The Woodfin center is located in the Woodfin Volunteer Fire Department at 20 New Street.

SBA Loan Assistance Centers provide an opportunity for disaster victims to discuss their loan applications directly with an SBA representative. Completing the application does not obligate the applicant to an SBA loan, but it is a required step in determining if they are eligible for any other types of assistance.

Even after the Recovery Centers transition to an SBA focus, the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) will still be available to provide help or answer questions. Applicants may now register online at: www.fema.gov. Those who prefer using the phone should call toll-free 1-800-621-FEMA (3362), or, for the hearing or speech-impaired, 1-800-462-7585. The deadline for registering with FEMA for Tropical Storm Frances is Nov. 9; the deadline for Hurricane Ivan is Nov. 19.

On March 1, 2003, FEMA became part of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security. FEMA’s mission within the new department is to lead the effort to prepare the nation for all hazards and effectively manage federal response and recovery efforts following any national incident. FEMA also initiates proactive mitigation activities, trains first responders, and manages the National Flood Insurance Program and the U.S. Fire Administration.
