ORLANDO, Fla. -- Faced with a four-hurricane disaster of unprecedented scale, federal, Florida and local emergency response agencies have set up a telephone hotline to help meet the needs of hurricane victims who are still without housing.

The toll-free Florida Hurricane Housing Hotline, 1-888-472-1727, is now open from 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. Eastern time seven days a week. Florida hurricane victims in an area with no other housing available can call the number to receive assistance with emergency housing. The operator will need your name, your FEMA case number if you have one, what your situation is, and how you can be contacted.

The Florida Hurricane Housing Hotline is a special number, separate from the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) disaster registration line. The Housing Hotline is set up solely to find housing for those with no other alternative.

The State Emergency Response Team is a collaboration of state agencies led by the state coordinating officer. SERT's mission is to ensure that Florida is prepared to respond to emergencies, recover from them, and mitigate their impact. On March 1, 2003, FEMA became part of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security. FEMA's continuing mission within the new department is to lead the effort to prepare the nation for all hazards and effectively manage federal response and recovery efforts following any national incident. FEMA also initiates proactive mitigation activities, trains first responders, and manages the National Flood Insurance Program and the U.S. Fire Administration.
