HARRISBURG, Pa. -- State and federal recovery officials are advising residents who have disaster-related damage to be extremely careful when hiring contractors to clean up and repair their homes and businesses.

“In disaster situations, scam artists are often ready to take advantage of the misfortunes of others,” warns Federal Coordinating Officer Tom Davies.

The Attorney General’s Office and the Better Business Bureau offer the following suggestions for flood victims to consider before hiring a contractor:

“Persons having problems with a contractor or who suspect fraud are urged to call the Attorney General’s Office of Consumer Protection at 717-787-3392,” said David M. Sanko, state coordinating officer.

On March 1, 2003, FEMA became part of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security. FEMA's continuing mission within the new department is to lead the effort to prepare the nation for all hazards and effectively manage federal response and recovery efforts following any national incident. FEMA also initiates proactive mitigation activities, trains first responders, and manages the National Flood Insurance Program and the U.S. Fire Administration.
