FEMA/State Disaster Recovery Centers To Close, But Help Continues To Be Available

RICHMOND, Va. -- The Disaster Recovery Centers operating at 730 E. Broad Street in Richmond and at the Dumbarton Library, 6800 Staples Mill Road, in Henrico County, will close at 7 p.m., Friday, Oct. 8. The two centers will be open from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Friday next week.
“If you want to talk to someone in person about disaster assistance or check on the status of your application, you will need to see us by next Friday,” Federal Coordinating Officer Marianne C. Jackson said.
Individuals who have not already registered by telephone should do so before visiting a center. The toll-free number is 1-800-621-FEMA (3362) or TTY 1-800-462-7585 for the speech or hearing impaired. Those wishing to check on the status of their application may continue to call the FEMA Helpline at the same toll-free number after the two centers close.
More than 1,100 people have visited the Richmond area disaster recovery centers since they opened. However, only 122 people took advantage of the centers this week.
On March 1, 2003, FEMA became part of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security. FEMA’s continuing mission within the new department is to lead the effort to prepare the nation for all hazards and effectively manage federal response and recovery efforts following any national incident. FEMA also initiates proactive mitigation activities, trains first responders, and manages Citizen Corps, the National Flood Insurance Program and the U.S. Fire Administration.
