2005 Accomplishments Among Special Populations

The HIV/AIDS/STDs in Youth At Risk: Eliminating Disparities Among All Youth conference convened June 8-10, 2005 in Kansas City, Missouri. This conference provided skill-building CD's to all participants attending the conference. The goal was to provide teachers and educators tools to personalize and develop student programs within their communities. The Office on Women's Health co-sponsored this event.

The Cultural Rebirth: New Approaches To Living with Diabetes Conference convene on April 20-21, 2005 in South Sioux City, NE. This conference addressed Native Americans living with diabetes as well as focused on prevention and treatment among providers and caregivers for Region VII tribes. The tribes included: Ponca, Santee, Omaha, and Winnebago. The Office on Women's Health co-sponsored this event.

The "Pass It Forward" World AIDS Day event convened on December 1, 2004 in Kansas City, MO at Bruce R. Watkins Heritage Center. The one day summit focused on increasing the awareness of HIV/AIDS and STD's to high school seniors to assist them in making better decisions regarding sexual health. The seniors were provided HIV/AIDS education and prevention information based on the ABC model that would allow them to pass the information on to peers in their schools. Twelve public schools from Kansas and Missouri, one-hundred forty-two girls, sixteen sponsors and thirty-two co-sponsors participated in this event.

The American Indian Symposium/Forum convened on November 16-17, 2004 in Kansas City, MO. This was the First Regional Symposium/Forum that targeted Native Americans. There were twenty-one tribes represented and over four-hundred attendees participated in this event. The Office on Women Health was very instrumental in the planning of this event. As a result of this conference there was a commitment to host an Annual American Indian Symposium. The 2nd American Indian Symposium is November 7-8, 2005.

The VERB Conference "It's what you do." June 26, 2004 in Lincoln, NE. An action-packed day of activities and education for 9-13 year old girls and the adults (mom, grandmothers, teachers, coaches, etc.) who care for them. There were over three-hundred girls who attended this conference to physical inactivity among girls. The Office on Women's Health co-sponsored this event.
