Title: NM Breast and Cervical Cancer screening program

Definition/Purpose: The NM Breast & Cervical Cancer Early Detection programs provide free comprehensive breast and cervical cancer screening services to low-income women statewide. The program was founded on the rationale that screening mammograms detect early stage cancers; and pap tests detect pre-cancerous lesions or early cancers.

The program funded by the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), has been in operation since 1991. The priority population for screening is women:

  • Age 50 to 64
  • At or below 250% poverty level
  • Living in rural areas
  • Uninsured and underinsured
  • Members of a minority population
  • In need of re-screening

Product/Tools: free screening services: clinical breast exams, mammograms, pap tests, pelvic exam

Free diagnostic services for abnormal screening results; public education materials and outreach; enrollment in Medicaid to treat B&CC if diagnosed through B&CC program; professional education and TA to contracting providers.
