Partnering to Fight HIV/AIDS
The CDC Global AIDS Program Namibia office was launched in September 2002.
Since then, CDC has been assisting the Namibia Ministry of Health in combating
the HIV epidemic. CDC works to reduce HIV transmission and
provide treatment and care for those already infected with HIV and tuberculosis
(TB). CDC provides extensive technical expertise to help increase laboratory
capacity to support antiretroviral therapy (ART), prevention of mother-to-child
HIV transmission services, Early Infant Diagnosis, and TB diagnosis.
In 2003, US President George W. Bush announced the President's Emergency Plan
for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR). Namibia was designated a focus country of the
initiative and CDC GAP Namibia became a part of this unified US Government
effort to turn the tide against the epidemic.
