Copyright and Other Restrictions

The Library of Congress is offering broad public access to The Veterans History Project materials included in the “Courage, Patriotism and Community” presentation as a contribution to education and scholarship. The Veterans History Project materials include audio and videotaped oral histories along with documentary materials such as letters, diaries, maps, photographs, and memoirs, of America's war veterans and those who served in support of them. Veterans and interviewers contributed these materials to the Library for scholarly and educational purposes, reserving to themselves any copyright or performance rights they may hold. Researchers or others who would like to make further use of these materials should Contact the Veterans History Project of the American Folklife Center at the Library of Congress for assistance.

Some materials in these collections may be protected by the U.S. Copyright Law (Title 17, U.S.C.) and/or by the copyright or neighboring-rights laws of other nations. More information about U.S. Copyright is provided by the Copyright Office. Additionally, privacy and publicity rights may apply. The written permission of the copyright owners and/or holders of other rights is required for distribution, reproduction, or other use of protected items beyond that allowed by fair use or other statutory exemptions. Responsibility for making an independent legal assessment of an item and securing any necessary permissions ultimately rests with persons desiring to use the item: it is the patron's obligation to determine and satisfy copyright or other use restrictions when publishing or otherwise distributing materials found in the Library's collections.

The American Folklife Center feels a strong ethical responsibility to the people who have consented to have their lives documented for the historical record. The Center asks that researchers approach the materials in the Veterans History Project Collection with respect for the sensibilities of the people whose lives and thoughts are documented here.

The staff of the Veterans History Project encourages the public to contact the Center regarding the materials in this collection:
