FOR RELEASE:

Veterans Day reminds every American of the great debt the nation owes to the
soldiers and veterans of our armed forces and to all those who have died in the
service of our country. Each year, we pause on this day to pay tribute to the
sacrifices of these great men and women. When we hear the lone bugler sound Taps,
we recall that the preservation of our most sacred freedoms came at a high cost—that
of the lives of the nation’s most courageous citizens.
Our children cannot fully appreciate these freedoms unless we teach them the
history of our great nation. And they cannot understand the ceremony of this day
unless they first understand its origins. We have a duty to teach our children
about the sacrifices of the generations that came before them and about the courage
of our men and women who are once again fighting for our freedom in Afghanistan,
Iraq, and elsewhere across the globe.
The U.S. Department of Education has created a Web site with resources to help
parents and teachers share the story of Veterans Day with children. I encourage
all Americans to visit http://www.ed.gov/free. And I hope
you will join me in celebrating this important holiday and honoring our bravest
citizens.
