U.S. Secretary of Education Rod Paige announced today that Loretta Petty will serve as deputy assistant secretary for special education and rehabilitative services.

As deputy assistant secretary, Petty will be responsible for helping Assistant Secretary Robert Pasternack with the general management and direction of operations for national special education and rehabilitative programs.

Prior to joining the Education Department, Petty served in Virginia Governor James S. Gilmore's administration as chief deputy commissioner for two state agencies: the Virginia Department for the Aging and the Virginia Department of Rehabilitative Services. Previously, Petty worked as the legislative coordinator for Virginia’s Secretary of Health and Human Resources, serving former secretaries Kay Coles James, Bob Metcalf, and Claude Allen. In that capacity, Petty coordinated legislative activities for 12 agencies under the office of the secretary, advised the secretary on legislative matters, and worked with state elected officials about pending legislation.

A native of Richmond, Virginia, Petty earned a Bachelor of Science degree from Radford University.
