Daphne:  I think you are right.  A matched study would give much better information.  Right now I'm looking at the results of a study by the American Council of Education in 1992.  In higher education (university) 16 % of deans are women and 16% are presidents.  For all institutions, 14% of presidents are female.  Knowing the typical years of work experience and level of education of the lower level administrators that would get promoted into these higher positions, I would say there is no difference between males and females.  Only a matched study would tell us that.
At our college, when we had an Hispanic female president, there was a great deal of diversity in our administration.  After she left a white male president came in.  Now most of our administrators are white males.  Go figure.  Our board (all male save one) actually let it be known that they would only hire a male president.
>From what I know about all these people, they have the same levels of education and experience--no wait--the women and male minorities who were displaced have been replaced by men with lower levels of education and experience (PhD, EdD replaced by MA, MBA).  The women who were not replaced are far meeker than the ones who were forced out.  Likewise, the minorities who were not replaced are not as assertive.
At our college, 85% of our students are minorities and 61% are female.
