Projects, Products, and Tools for Practice

Title: State Women's Health Coordinators' Monthly Conference calls

Purpose : To better share information and ideas about topics/issues that impact the health and wellness of women and their families – among the states and territories. These calls have been informative, provoking great discussions about topics/issues that impact the health and wellness of women and their families. Topic calls are alternated with planning calls. Topics for this past year have included: Group Planning and updates for National Women's Health Week (monthly Dec. 2004 – April 2005), Women's Health Indicators Database (November/December 2004), Teen Suicide and Suicide Prevention Task Force report (January 2005), Obesity on Children and Eating Disorders in Adolescent girls (March 2005), Interrelationship of Physical and Behavioral Health ; Depression and Anxiety in Women (May 2005), and Making the Grade on Women's Health: A National and State by State Report Card (July 2005). A review of the Women's Health Initiative is scheduled for August 2005.

Title: ACOG Providers Partnership on Perinatal Depression

Definition/Purpose: This diverse group of stakeholders meets regularly to strategize and develop a statewide plan to address perinatal depression and improve outcomes. The group is presently working on a proposal to launch a one or more pilots the would use a multi-faceted approach to address perinatal depression and other mood disorders.

Title: 100 Women (of Austin)

Definition/Purpose: 100 Women is a group of determined women on a mission to impact women's health issues in Central Texas. This is the second year that this group will strategically fund a local nonprofit organization with an "impact grant" to address a need in Central Texas concerning women's health. That impact grant will be in the amount of $100,000 to one local nonprofit organization. Each member of 100 Women will contribute $1,000 ($84 a month) to the fund. The message behind 100 Women is that 100 Women who combine forces to tackle a major women's health issue can be very powerful. The TX SWHC continues to serve on the advisory committee.

Title: The Women's Health Assessment Toolkit (WHAT)

Purpose: The Women's Health Assessment Toolkit (WHAT) is a project of the Texas Medical Center Women's Health Network, the Texas Alliance of Women's Health Networks, and the Region VI Office on Women's Health, U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. The WHAT has been developed to foster the formation, growth, and success of women's health networks throughout the region.

The WHAT provides a series of guided exercises that help local community planners:

  • Identify existing assets and prioritize needs (Part 1, Community Women's Health Assets);
  • Learn about the women of their area (Part 2, Demographic Profile);
  • Adopt measurable objectives (Part 3, Women's Health Indicators); and

Incorporate findings into a usable planning document (Part 4, Putting It All Together)
