Information on TUXCOE in Louisiana Legislation

In Spring 2004, under our new Governor, the State of Louisiana passed legislation creating a statewide Women's Health Commission. In September of the same year, Act 644 was signed by the Governor in which TUXCOE was named a statutory member of the Louisiana Women's Health Commission.

The Commission is charged with the following:

  • To study issues related to educating women on women's health and causes of death
  • To identify any gaps in the health and social services delivery systems that particularly affect women and their access to healthcare services and make recommendations to the Department of Health and Hospitals, other appropriate stage agencies, and the legislature
  • To identify wellness and preventive efforts such as the type of critical screening tests (including pap smears, mammograms, and colorectal cancer detection)
  • To identify methods for communities to foster good health, efforts to bolster the economic security of women, to address the discrimination they face, to reduce injuries and to improve the environments in which they live
  • To not promote or advocate abortion, abortafacia drugs or gun control

The Louisiana Women's Health Commission legislation was initiated, and is now chaired by, Senator Diane Bajoie, who sits on the TUXCOE Community Advisory Board. Representatives on the Women's Health Commission include both Tulane and Xavier, specifically TUXCOE Director Jeanette Magnus and TUXCOE Deputy Director Dr. Kathleen Kennedy.
