Women's Wellness and Maternity Center
Madisonville, TN
The Women's Wellness and Maternity Center (WWMC), has been in operation since 1983, when it became the first publicly funded out-of-hospital birth center. WWMC certified nurse-midwives provide a full-spectrum of essential health care services for women and their newborn infants in the rural Appalachian community of Madisonville. The center increasingly serves as the safety net provider for the area's rapidly growing Latino population, as well as women affected by the recently imposed cutbacks in TennCare, Tennessee's Medicaid program.
Key WWMC services and programs include:
- Prenatal, labor and delivery, and postpartum care;
- Breastfeeding education and support services, family planning, annual physicals and gynecology services;
- Well-child checkups and immunizations;
- Patient focused resource classes (i.e., available assistance, accessing services, community agencies, etc.);
- Doula Training Program;
- Wellness and disease prevention programs/events, including the Family Wellness Fair.
