2006 National Land Cover Data (NLCD 2006)

Historically, NLCD has been a land-cover mapping program. MRLC partners have been working hard to make NLCD a land-cover monitoring program. NLCD 2006 is being undertaken with the objective of making NLCD a land-cover monitoring program. NLCD 2006 will be produced using the basic model of change detection developed by the NOAA C-CAP program, a pivotal MRLC partner. Imagery from ca. 2001 and 2006 will be compared spectrally. Areas identified as change will be extracted from the image sets and classified according to NLCD 2001 methods. The classified change areas will be integrated into the NLCD 2001 to produce NLCD 2006. In short, NLCD 2001 will serve as the base map for NLCD 2006. Spectral change methods research is ongoing in Washington State, South Dakota, southern California, New England and the Mississippi Delta. The ongoing efforts to develop change products for NLCD 1992 and NLCD 2001 integrate with NLCD 2006 to provide a glimpse of an effective, national-scope land-cover monitoring program, as illustrated with the pictures below.
