A Dragoon's Tale is a play in three acts about a fictitious dragoon officer and his exploits while stationed at Fort Scott. The play explores the activities of the dragoons along the Santa Fe and Oregon Trails and in the Mexican-American War. Students play the roles of dragoons, a Santa Fe trader, Texan "freebooters", Oregon pioneers, Pawnee Indians, and a Mexican Lancer. The program consists of the play, a map exercise and a discussion of the results of dragoon activity during the era of Manifest Destiny.
Did You Know?
After Fort Scott was abandoned by the army in 1853, the buildings were sold at public auction, and the fort became the town of Fort Scott. One of the officers' quarters eventually became the Goodlander Home for Children. For about fifty years, orphans and other needy children were cared for here.
