Learning About Puerto Rico in Our Nation’s Schools
U.S. House of Representatives Recognizes the Role of U.S. Territories in History

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Puerto Rico’s Resident Commissioner, Luis Fortuño, anticipated that on Monday the U.S. House of Representatives would approve a resolution to promote studying the role of U.S. territories in the nation’s history.  House Concurrent Resolution 2, introduced by Congresswoman Donna Christensen (D-USVI), has the support of 46 co-sponsors, including Fortuño.

“The U.S. territories are an important part of our nation, and as such, students should learn about these areas in school as part of their history class,” the Resident Commissioner said, pointing out that “our future leaders must know the valuable contributions made to the nation’s history by American citizens living in the territories.” The Resolution calls for the study of Puerto Rico, the U.S. Virgin Islands, Guam, American Samoa and the Northern Marianas Islands as part of a balanced history curriculum in schools.

Residents of the territories have had a tremendous impact on the history and culture of the United States, including on its music, art, science, sport, politics and educational policy.  However, there are still many children and adults in this country who do not know the names of the territories or their location on a map, because the territories are not generally studied as part of the academic curriculum.

"The history of baseball in the United States would not be the same without the participation of players such as Roberto Clemente," the Resident Commissioner said, noting that every student in the United States should know about the contributions made to their country’s history and culture by talented Puerto Ricans, such as the actor Benicio del Toro, Surgeon General Dr. Antonia Novello de Coello, musician Tito Puente, politician Maurice Ferré and U.S. Air Force pilot Fernando Ribas Dominicci.
