FORTUÑO PUSHES FOR STATUS DISCUSSION BEFORE REPUBLICAN CONFERENCE
The resident commissioner’s status bill continues to gain ground

Washington D.C. – Puerto Rico’s resident commissioner in Washington, Luis Fortuño, made a presentation before the Republican Conference’s Committee on Public Policy led by Congressman Adam Putnam of Florida. The meeting by the Committee on Public Policy was sponsored by Congressman Lincoln Díaz-Balart and was titled "The Status of Puerto Rico and Related Legislation before the 109th Congress."

During his message, the resident commissioner highlighted the importance of reaching a final solution to the issue of Puerto Rico’s status. Fortuño also offered a bill he authored as a truly democratic alternative, since it would allow all Puerto Ricans to have a direct vote in deciding their political future. He also indicated, "the response that this bill continues to receive proves that Congress recognizes the importance of this issue, not only for Puerto Rico, but for the nation." The Republican Conference’s Committee on Public Policy is the group charged with supporting U.S. House of Representative leaders in the development of the congressional legislative agenda.

The resident commissioner also announced that two additional members of Congress joined in this week as cosponsors of the status bill (HR 4867), which he introduced in Congress along with Congressman José Serrano. With the additional backing, 105 members of Congress (61 Republicans and 44 Democrats) now sponsor the bill introduced by the commissioner. The new coauthors of the bill are Republican Spencer Bachus (Alabama) and Democrat Adam Smith (Washington).
