Glossary of Terms Used in King County Job Announcements

  1. Open Until Further Notice: The position will be closed at the discretion of the Department.

  2. Open Continuous: More than one position available. The hiring authority accepts applications throughout the year.

  3. Open Until Filled: The position will be filled when an applicant is hired.

  4. Extended: The position had a previous closing date and the hiring authority has determined a new closing date.

  5. Re-open: The Position closed and the hiring authority determined that

    1. No applications were received. OR

    2. Not enough applications were submitted OR

    3. More applications were needed to create a viable candidate pool

  6. FLSA Exempt Position: The position is exempt from the Fair Labor Standards Act overtime pay requirements. This position is not eligible for overtime pay.

  7. FLSA Non- Exempt Position: This position is not exempt from the Fair Labor Standards Act. The position is eligible for overtime pay.

  8. Career Service Position: The position is filled from an established list or pool which utilized a competitive process. The person hired for the position must pass the probationary period.

  9. TLT(Term Limited Position): The position is filled for a designated time period. This position may be FLSA Exempt or FLSA Non-Exempt.

  10. (BOW) Body of Work Work: designated by the hiring authority to be performed either continuously or for a designated time period.

  11. Appointed Position: Selection for this position is done by the hiring authority. The position is normally FLSA Exempt.

  12. Probationary Period: This is the time period which the newly hired employee must show his or her competency for the position for which they were hired for. The hiring authority determines the length of time the employee must serve before passing or failing their probation. Also Union contracts may determine the length of time of probation
