Ballots in the mail for Americans abroad

Today King County Elections mailed 15,419 ballots to voters living overseas, out of the state or who serve in the military; two days before the state deadline. The early mailing allows extra transit time for voters to receive and return their mail ballots for the upcoming General Election and meets the United States Department of Justice’s recommended timeframe.

“We go to great lengths to protect the right of our troops to participate in our democratic process, but we need help from voters to make this work,” said Elections Director Sherril Huff. “Voters who are away from home traveling abroad or serving in the armed forces are reminded to contact their home county election office every time they move and keep us updated on where to mail their ballots."

Immediately following certification of the primary, King County works as quickly as possible to print and mail ballots to allow for maximum transit time for ballots traveling thousands of miles to countries including Romania, New Zealand and Denmark. Return postage for these ballots is paid.
