Basic Information
EPA defines environmental justice (EJ) as the fair treatment and meaningful involvement of all people regardless of race, color, national origin, or income with respect to the development, implementation, and enforcement of environmental laws, regulations, and policies. Region 8's EJ Program works with other EPA staff, states, tribes, and communities to incorporate EJ into program activities and policies to ensure that the environment and human health are fairly protected.

How did EPA get involved? |

As a result of community concerns and activities,
Executive Order 12898 was signed in 1994. The Executive Order, "Federal
Actions to Address Environmental Justice in Minority Populations and Low
Income Populations," applies to federal agencies that conduct activities
that substantially affect human health or the environment. The order directs
