EPA mid-Atlantic's Dive Team consists of six people and operates out of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The team averages 100 dives a year. For ocean dives, the team operates off of the Ocean Survey Vessel Bold. For dives into the Delaware and Chesapeake Bays the team uses the Research Vessel Lear. For dives into quarries, lakes, and rivers a small fleet of boats owned by EPA (12 to 18 feet long) is used.
The team:
- studies artificial reefs along the coast
- assesses dump site activities
- locates and identifies drums that are in an aquatic environment
- studies the infestation of zebra mussels in the Ohio River from Pennsylvania and West Virginia through Kentucky
- helped in the search for Shuttle Columbia debris in Toledo Bend
