Threats

The mission of the Western Wildland Environmental Threat Assessment Center is to generate and transfer scientific information and science-based applications, tools and technologies to policymakers, resource owners/managers/planners, regulatory agencies, communities and publics so they can characterize, assess, and manage effects of important ecological disturbances and environmental changes-with particular focus on threats to ecosystem conditions and services that are valued by society.

Encyclopedia of Forest Threats

A comprehensive resource on wildland threats is contained in the Forest Encyclopedia Network. This site provides natural resource professionals and the public with the scientific knowledge and tools they need to achieve their objectives. The Network is designed to connect scientific results, conclusions, and impacts with management needs and issues. Now the ever-expanding scientific knowledge base of forest information is being organized into an integrated system that can be easily accessed and used. The Forest Encyclopedia Network consists of a growing number of encyclopedias covering different fields of forest science.

The Encyclopedia of Forest Environmental Threats promises to deliver to researchers, land managers, and policymakers the scientific knowledge about environmental threats they need to achieve their objectives. Currently under development, this encyclopedia—like the others in the Forest Encyclopedia Network—will connect scientific results, conclusions, and impacts with management needs and issues. Content is being assembled with an official launch scheduled for January 2008.

Until the official launch, explore this site to learn more about the encyclopedia and its progress. Check out the abstracts from the conference presentations to get an idea of the topics we'll be covering--the encyclopedia will be drawing on content from most of syntheses and case studies.

The encyclopedia's initial content will come from 49 synthesis and case study papers presented in July 2006 in Boulder, Colorado, at the "Advances in Threat Assessment and Their Application to Forest and Rangeland Management" conference. These papers have competed peer review and technical editing and are currently being edited for style and imported to the encyclopedia. More than 170 researchers and managers attended the conference, jointly sponsored by the Eastern Forest Environmental Threat Assessment Center and the Western Wildland Environmental Threat Assessment Center.

Additional Threat Summary Information

The Eastern Forest Environmental Threat Assessment Center (EFETAC) has additional linkages to Federal, State, and local resources that offer additional in-depth information on various forest threats.
