RALEIGH, N.C. -- Next week, it will have been six months since Hurricane Floyd moved into eastern North Carolina bringing high winds and a deluge of up to 29 inches of rain in some locales. Just a month later Hurricane Irene brought another assault and more misery to the same area.
During that half year, the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), the U. S. Small Business Administration (SBA), the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP), and the state of North Carolina have paid or authorized more than $1.08 billion in disaster recovery assistance.
Nearly 88,000 residents and business owners in the 66 counties declared major disaster areas by the President have registered for assistance.
The long-term recovery effort is now underway, and emphasis is slowly turning from emergency disaster assistance to hazard mitigation--reducing the vulnerability of communities to future disasters.
The $1.08 billion is divided among these programs:
