HARRISBURG, Pa. -- Juniata County has been made eligible for federal assistance as a result of damage caused by heavy rains and flooding late last month, federal and state officials have announced.

Juniata County has been approved for Individual Assistance and Hazard Mitigation programs based on damage that occurred during heavy rains and storms Aug. 20 and 21.

"On behalf of Gov. Tom Ridge, I am very pleased that federal aid for Individual Assistance is now available to the storm stricken residents of Juniata County," said Bob Churchman, state coordinating officer for the Pennsylvania Emergency Management Agency (PEMA).

Under the individual assistance program, residents may be eligible for programs such as disaster housing assistance, low-interest loans to repair or replace storm-damaged property, and grants for serious needs and necessary expenses not met by other programs.

The hazard mitigation program provides money to help protect homes and businesses against future damage by flood proofing, relocating or elevating buildings, and by taking other similar protective or preventive measures.

"Individuals and business owners in this county who have sustained damages from the storms are encouraged to apply for federal assistance by calling toll-free, 1-800-462-9029," said Jack Schuback, federal coordinating officer for the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA). People with speech or hearing impairments can call 1-800-462-7585 (TTY).
