Show Music on Record: A Searchable Database based on the book by Jack Raymond

Notes on Terminology

Dates

Opening Date: For most stage shows, this indicates the opening date in New York or in London, Vienna, Paris, or another foreign capital. If the show did not play in New York or a foreign capital, the opening in another major city is listed. The date chosen is the date of the "official" premiere of the musical show -- usually the performance that the critics reviewed.

Broadcast Date: For radio and television shows, this indicates the date of the first broadcast.

Release Date: For films and original record productions, this indicates the year of release.

Release Date of Recording: For unproduced shows and films, this indicates the year of the recording’s release.

Types of Productions

Original Production: For stage shows, this refers to a New York production unless otherwise specified, e.g. Original (Arlington, VA) production.

For films, this indicates a contemporary recording of music from the film by members of the original film production. An Original Production recording for a film is distinct from both a Soundtrack recording produced directly from the original film and a Studio Production created from the score of the film.

Album: When Album is used in place of Studio Production, it indicates that the material is more a collection of songs from the show than a full-fledged studio production.

Recordings

The first edition of a recording is listed, whether it be a cylinder, 78-rpm, 45-rpm, LP, or CD. If the recording has been reissued on LP or CD, significant reissues also are listed. No attempt has been made to include every single edition of a recording. If one edition is complete and another is not, this information will be indicated. In addition, an effort has been made to list all reissued recordings included in artist albums and anthologies.

Unless otherwise indicated, LPs are 12-inch, and 45s and EPs are 7-inch. The size of 78-rpm single records is not specified. 78-rpm albums are 10-inch unless specified as 12-inch. When a country name follows a label name, this indicates the location of the pressing.
