President Bush has named a strong leader and remarkable public servant in Dr. Jeff Runge as acting Under Secretary for Science and Technology. Jeff is temporarily taking on this important duty during a period of transition at the Science and Technology directorate while maintaining his responsibilities as Chief Medical Officer.

Jeff will provide critical direction and sound management at an agency that is vital to homeland security. The Science and Technology directorate has the tremendous responsibility of testing and designing the next generation of equipment and tools our front line employees and first responders need to protect our country against the threats of terror and respond to major catastrophes.

Jeff will help the directorate to reach its true potential and ensure that its programs and activities are aligned with the department's risk management philosophy. He has my confidence and full support.
