FEMA Changes Registration and Helpline Hours

PISCATAWAY, N.J. -- The hours of operation for the special toll-free telephone number for people affected by Tropical Storm Floyd have changed. People can register for assistance immediately by calling the toll-free number from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., seven days a week, at 1-800-462-9029. Persons with a speech or hearing impairment can call 1-800-462-7585 (TTY).
The registration process, which takes 15 to 20 minutes, sets the wheels in motion for a wide range of state, federal and voluntary disaster assistance programs. Applicants should have some needed information ready when calling, including: the physical and mailing addresses of the damaged property including ZIP code; directions for reaching the property; the applicant's Social Security number; a telephone number where the applicant can be reached; and types of insurance carried, if any.
For those who need information about the status of their application, the Helpline hours also are from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., seven days a week. The toll-free number is 1-800-525-0321. People with hearing or speech impairments may call the TTY Helpline at 1-800-462-7585.
Representatives from the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) and the New Jersey Office of Emergency Management are encouraging anyone who has already applied for assistance and have questions about disaster assistance recovery programs to call the Helpline.
"Disaster victims can learn about housing programs and grants by calling this number," Federal Coordinating Officer Peter Martinasco of FEMA said. "The Helpline will be able to inform applicants about the status of their application and will be able to refer them to other agencies or organizations if necessary."
