Coal Leases By Application at East Lynn Lake

The Bureau of Land Management-Eastern States in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, will launch the preparation of a Land Use Analysis (LUA)/ Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) for two coal lease by applications (LBAs) at East Lynn Lake, located in Wayne County, West Virginia.  The LBAs have been submitted by Rockspring Corporation and Argus Energy.  Before any coal lease can be granted, coal-mining issues will be analyzed in a LUA/EIS.  A public scoping meeting will be scheduled for the first part of November 2006.

East Lynn Lake is an impoundment created by the damming of the East Fork of Twelvepole Creek and is managed by the U.S. Army Corp of Engineers.  For more information, please contact John Romito, Team Lead, Solid Minerals Team, Rolla, Missouri, at (573) 341-7418.

The BLM manages more land – 262 million surface acres – more than any other Federal agency.  Most of this public land is located in 12 Western States, including Alaska.  The Bureau, with a budget of about $1.8 billion, also administers 700 million acres of sub-surface mineral estate throughout the nation.  The BLM’s multiple-use mission is to sustain the health and productivity of the public lands for the use and enjoyment of present and future generations.  The Bureau accomplishes this by managing such activities as outdoor recreation, livestock grazing, mineral development, and energy production, and by conserving natural, historical, and cultural resources on the public lands.
