Indianapolis, IN -- A temporary Disaster Recovery Center will open on Friday, September 19, in Hendricks County to serve victims of the severe storms, tornadoes and flooding that occurred between August 26 and September 15, announced officials from the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) and the Indiana State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA).

After calling the toll-free application number, 1-800-621-FEMA (TTY 1-800-462-7585), disaster victims may visit the center to meet face-to-face with recovery specialists and talk about disaster assistance programs. Homeowners, renters and business owners can receive help completing their U.S. Small Business Administration loan applications.

Visitors to the center can check on the status of the applications they have already made by phone, as well as learn cost-effective measures to reduce the impact of future disasters. These are temporary offices, so Hoosiers are encouraged to take advantage of this opportunity to have their questions answered about disaster assistance.

Location: Avon Fire Station #2
10499 Caroles Lane
Avon
Hours: 9:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m.

Additional Disaster Recovery Centers are located at these locations:

The first step in receiving federal assistance made available under the September 5 Presidential disaster declaration is to register by calling the toll-free FEMA application number, 1-800-621-FEMA (3362). There is also a special number, TTY 1-800-462-7585, for those with speech- or hearing-impairment. Both lines are open 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. daily, until further notice.

On March 1, 2003, FEMA became part of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security. FEMA's continuing mission within the new department is to lead the effort to prepare the nation for all hazards and effectively manage federal response and recovery efforts following any national incident. FEMA also initiates proactive mitigation activities, trains first responders, and manages Citizen Corps, the National Flood Insurance Program and the U.S. Fire Administration.
