WICHITA, Kan. -- People who live or work in Sedgwick, Reno, and Sumner counties and who are unable to work because of the severe storms and tornadoes that hit the area May 3, 1999, may be eligible for Disaster Unemployment Assistance (DUA). DUA is funded by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) and administered by the Kansas Department of Human Resources (KDHR).
For residents of Sedgwick County, the application period for DUA will close June 7, 1999. Those affected should call the KDHR Wichita Unemployment Insurance Office at 316-383-9947 to determine eligibility under the program. For Reno and Sumner counties, the DUA application period will close June 14, 1999. Affected residents should call the KDHR Wichita Unemployment Insurance Office at 1-800-292-6333 to determine eligibility. The DUA program covers persons not covered under a state program, including self-employed workers, farm workers, and those not eligible under other programs.
Those applying for DUA should also register with FEMA for disaster assistance. Eligibility for assistance is determined on a case by case basis. If an individual suffered damages and losses from the severe storms and tornadoes on May 3, 1999, that person may register with FEMA by calling 800-462-9029 (TTY 800-462-7585).
Those who have already registered may check the status of their application by calling the toll-free Helpline at 800-525-0321 (TTY 800-462-7585). The hours for teleregistration and the Helpline are 8:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. Monday through Saturday.
