Research Project:
OAT GERMPLASM EVALUATION FOR STEM RUST RESISTANCE
Location: Aberdeen, Idaho
Project Number: 5366-21000-027-04
Project Type:
Specific Cooperative Agreement
Start Date: Aug 07, 2007
End Date: Sep 30, 2009
Objective:
Evaluate 10,200 National Small Grains Collection (NSGC) cultivated oat (Avena sativa) accessions for reaction to stem rust (incited by Puccinia graminis f.sp. avenae).
Approach:
Evaluations will include all available accessions of the cultivated oat, Avena sativa, in the National Small Grains Collection. Planting will be done in November at the Ben Hur Farm, LSU. Each accession will be planted in a 4' plot on 14" centers within ranges of 100. Adjacent to each range will be a range of spreader cultivars which will be individual 4' rows of the cultivars Trophy, TAM-O-405, and another SR-susceptible cultivar. A foliar fungicide will be applied to the ranges of accessions (but no the spreads) around March 1 to suppress crown rust, but not inhibit SR. The plots will also include about 50 genetic stocks to serve as differentials and race-testers. As each cycle is completed, data collected will be added to the Germplasm Resources Evaluation Network (GRIN). Formerly 5366-21000-022-08S (4/08).
