Research Project:
FUSARIUM HEAD BLIGHT RESEARCH IN WINTER WHEAT
Project Number: 0500-00053-002-15
Project Type:
Grant
Start Date: May 27, 2004
End Date: May 26, 2009
Objective:
Evaluate scab resistance in accessions originating from countries not yet sampled (France and Germany) and from countries where a preliminary sample identified resistance in more agronomically desirable genotypes. Coordinate the introduction, quarantine, increase, screening, and distribution of resistant wheat germplasm identified through the collaborative agreement between USWBSI and CIMMYT.
Approach:
Continue to identify useful, novel sources of scab resistance through greenhouse and field screening of all advanced breeding lines in the Missouri wheat breeding program. Identify and/or confirm further useful sources of scab resistance. Continue to incorporate and pyramid new sources of resistance, as verified, into elite Missouri soft red winter wheat breeding lines. Evaluate approximately 100 breeding lines that contain multiple sources of diverse resistance. Conduct genetic analyses of these newly identified sources of resistance. Characterize the genetics for resistance to scab in Truman. Use conventional 6-generation means analysis to study resistance in Truman. Use results from population development initiated in 2003 to complement molecular work on a doubled haploid set of lines expected to begin in 2004/2005.
FY06 Projects:
1. Introgression and Genetics of Novel Sources of Scab Resistance in Winter Wheat
2. Accelerating the Development of Scab Resistant Soft Red Winter Wheat
