Charleston, W. Va. -- Three meetings are scheduled for local citizens to talk with state and federal officials about ways to prevent flood damage. The countywide meetings will be held in Wood, Ohio and Brooke counties.

Controlling flood damage is known as “hazard mitigation.” Meeting participants will learn about the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) and State of West Virginia Hazard Mitigation Grant Program (HGMP), which is administered by the state and reviewed by FEMA.

HMGP grants are provided to the state and local governments to implement long-term hazard mitigation measures that reduce the loss of life and property.

The meetings will be as follows:

On March 1, 2003, FEMA became part of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security. FEMA's continuing mission within the new department is to lead the effort to prepare the nation for all hazards and effectively manage federal response and recovery efforts
following any national incident. FEMA also initiates proactive mitigation activities, trains first responders, and manages the National Flood Insurance Program and the U.S. Fire Administration.
