Charleston, W. VA. -- Public meetings are scheduled Monday in New Martinsville and Pine Grove, Wetzel County, for residents to talk with state and federal officials about ways to prevent, or mitigate, flood damage.

Participants in the two meetings will learn about the Hazard Mitigation Grant Program (HGMP) administered by the state and reviewed by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA). These grants are provided to the state and local governments to implement long-term hazard mitigation measures to reduce the loss of life and property.

Examples of projects include, but are not limited to, elevation, relocation and acquisition. To qualify for assistance the structures must be in a high-risk flood zone, have suffered 50 percent or greater damage and/or have been subject to repetitive flooding.

Individuals interested in a possible mitigation project for their own dwelling can learn more about the process by attending one of these meetings.

The meetings are:

On March 1, 2003, FEMA became part of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security. FEMA's continuing mission within the new department is to lead the effort to prepare the nation for all hazards and effectively manage federal response and recovery efforts following any national incident. FEMA also initiates proactive mitigation activities, Page trains first responders, and manages the National Flood Insurance Program and the U.S. Fire Administration.
